1984.OTHER. EscapistiCo

Kiev Opera and Ballet Theater for Children and Youth Kyiv, Mezhyhirska St, 2

"1984.OTHER / EscapistiCo" at the Kyiv Opera is an evening for those who are a little bored with the usual plots and predictable productions. Here, dance speaks louder than words, music is born right on stage, and after the performance, you find yourself thinking for a long time that doesn't go out with the lights in the hall.

INSHA Dance Company combines Orwell's dystopia, modern dance theater, a live experiment with sound, and a very familiar feeling: the desire to escape from the noise of the world for at least a moment and figure out what's really going on inside yourself.

"1984.OTHER" - when Orwell sounds through movement

In its first one-act performance, INSHA Dance Company reinterprets George Orwell's iconic novel through the language of dance. This is not a "book illustration," but a separate stage story about a person's struggle against the system, fear, and imposed reality.

Choreographers Ilya Miroshnichenko and Kateryna Kuznetsova create a dystopia where the body, light, and music work almost physically. On stage, there is control, propaganda, tension, and an attempt to remain oneself even when everything around forces silence.

A special vibe is created by the music of Gildur Gudnadottir, a composer known for the soundtracks to “Joker” and “Chernobyl,” as well as pianist Hauschka. This sound is not “for the background.” It literally draws you into the atmosphere of the performance.

"EscapistiCo" - escape from the noise or a meeting with yourself?

The second part of the evening is experimental dance theater, where reality seems to crumble into fragments of personality.

"EscapistiCo" is about a state familiar to many: when you want to turn off your phone, disappear from chats, and just hide from everything for at least a few hours. But the silence also begins to speak.

A metal sphere appears on stage, the main instrument of the performance. Every movement of the dancers creates sound in real time through a modular synthesizer. Here, music becomes movement, and movement becomes music.

Costumes created with the help of artificial intelligence, live sound and the absence of repetitions make each show special. This is not about “comfortable art”. It is rather an opportunity to look at yourself from the outside - without illusions and noise.

Why you should add it to your plans

This is a good option for cultural anti-everyday events, when you want to switch from routine and see modern theater that is not afraid to ask uncomfortable questions.

The event lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes with an intermission. It's perfect for an evening with friends, a date, or a solo outing — when you want to be among your friends and experience something unusual.

The performances are recommended for audiences aged 12 and over. Children under 6 years old have free admission without a separate seat.

The theater also has an algorithm for actions during an air raid: in case of danger, the audience is directed to the nearest shelter, and the performance is either continued after the closing time or postponed.
