Ternopil is a city with deep theatrical traditions, where the stage has always been a part of cultural life. Its history is connected with the names of Ivan Franko, Vasyl Stefanyk, Solomiya Krushelnytska, Mark Kropyvnytsky, Maria Zankovetska and other figures of Ukrainian art.

The beginnings of the theater movement in Ternopil

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ternopil became an important center of the Ukrainian stage. The luminaries of the theater performed here, the audience culture was formed, and interest in national drama grew.

The year 1915 became a landmark: Les Kurbas arrived in the city, who, together with professional actors and amateurs, initiated a theater movement called "Ternopil Theater Evenings".

"Ternopil Theater Evenings"

This was the first professional theater project in the city, which became an important milestone in the development of Ukrainian theater. The opening took place on October 18, 1915 with the production of "Natalka Poltavka" by Ivan Kotlyarevsky. Les Kurbas took part in the performance, and the orchestra provided accompaniment. The event was a great success and became the beginning of systematic theatrical life in the city.

Development of theatrical tradition

In the following years, works by Ukrainian and world classics appeared on the stage: Karpenko-Kary, Ivan Franko, Kvitka-Osnovyanenko, Hulak-Artemovsky, Chekhov and other authors. In parallel, the theater developed concert activities, where actors with vocal abilities played an important role, in particular Filomena Lopatynska, who later became a famous opera singer.

Formation of a professional theater

In the 1930s, a new stage in the development of theatrical art in the region took place. A mobile theater is formed, which is joined by professional actors and directors, including Yu. Shneiderman and artist V. Kulyk.

The repertoire includes prominent works of Ukrainian drama, in particular "Plato Krechet" by O. Korniychuk and "Duma pro Britannica" by Yu. Yanovsky.

Theatre in a period of change

In 1939, as a result of cultural transformations in the region, a new drama theater is formed, which continues the traditions of the Ukrainian stage.

Its repertoire includes classical and modern productions, and during the war years the theater adapts to new conditions, maintaining artistic activity in the format of chamber performances and concert programs.

Atmosphere of theatrical history

The Ternopil theatrical tradition is a continuous history of the development of the Ukrainian stage, combining classical heritage, experiment and live cultural memory of the city.
