Premonitions of Mina Mazaila
"Premonitions of Mina Mazaila" is a comedy that makes you laugh a little nervously. Because Mykola Kulish's lyrics, written almost a hundred years ago, sound as if someone just opened a news feed and transferred it to the stage.
About the performance "Premonitions of Mina Mazaila"
The Kyiv Academic Drama Theater in Podil is staging the legendary play by Mykola Kulish. The premiere of the play took place on January 19, 2006, but the story of Mina Mazayl still sounds very recognizable.
The main character is so ashamed of her Ukrainian surname that she decides to urgently “correct” it to a more “noble” and Russian one. For Mina, it’s a matter of status and a desire not to belong to the “second-class people.” But at home, such an idea triggers a real family disaster.
His son Mokiy, a self-confessed Ukrainian, categorically disagrees with his father. Then Aunt Motya bursts into the story with her radical views on Ukrainization, and the family dispute turns into a very sharp satire about language, self-identity, and an inferiority complex.
Kulish's comedy works precisely because of this strange mixture: absurdity, laughter, and a very uncomfortable recognition of oneself and society between the lines.
