Othello

2 May 2026, Sat. 17:00 - 19:00
Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Drama Theater Kyiv, 5 Bohdana Khmelnytskyi St.

Your chance to see a radical and profound reinterpretation of Shakespeare's classic by one of the most interesting directors of our time, David Petrosyan. The performance of "Othello" at the Lesya Ukrainka Theater is an ideal opportunity for you to get out of the routine of familiar plots, change the picture and immerse yourself in a psychological thriller about trust, inner demons and the trials that await us after victory.

"Othello" in the production of David Petrosyan: a battle within a person

Forget about the classic story of jealousy. In this stage version, "Othello" is, first of all, a story about distrust that destroys the individual and society. Events begin with victory, but it is at this moment that intrigues and slanders become more active. A general who has gained fame on the battlefield becomes the victim of a masterful game played behind his back. Director David Petrosyan sees Iago not simply as an enemy, but as a part of Othello himself - his dark "Ego", which comes into conflict with the bright ideals embodied by Desdemona.

This is a multi-layered action, where various manifestations of human nature collide on an existential level. The performance is filled with a special atmosphere thanks to the live musical accompaniment and the choir, which turns the tragedy into a kind of dark fairy tale. For you, this is an opportunity to put down your gadgets and immerse yourself in 170 minutes of intense intellectual theater that makes you think: are we ready to trust each other when the war is over, and how to defeat our own "Iago"?

What will make this evening special for you:

  • Director's vision: David Petrosyan creates a polyphonic world, where every sound and symbol works to reveal the hero's inner drama.
  • Strong cast: the powerful confrontation between Oleksandr Yatsentiuk (Othello) and Oleksandr Formanchuk (Iago), which keeps the audience in suspense until the last second.
  • Unique sound: the participation of professional musicians and the choirmaster's work by Susanna Karpenko add a special magical depth to the performance.
  • A fresh look at Shakespeare: an opportunity to see "Othello" as a modern warning about the crisis of trust in a post-traumatic society.
