Black Square
"Black Square" is an improvisational theater that appeared in 1991. The history of its emergence is more like a live stage experiment than a classic theater launch with a plan and script.
The idea was born at a moment when the search for new forms of play reached a dead end. One of the theater's founders came to class without preparation and instead of the traditional explanation simply spread a black square of fabric on the floor. And he told the actors to play as they felt in the moment — without prepared decisions, but with complete freedom of action.
This is how “Black Square” began to take shape — a theater that works with live improvisation, where the performance is never repeated the same way twice.
Improvisation as the basis
Improvisation here is a method of theatrical play in which the scene is born right in the moment. Without a clear script, but with a reaction to what is happening here and now.
The actors do not play roles learned in advance, but create them in real time. The audience becomes part of the process — reacts, influences the development of the scenes, and actually also participates in the performance.
It is precisely because of this unpredictability that each performance of “Black Square” has its own rhythm and mood — and this is what keeps the audience's attention until the final scene.
